Navigating the requirements of NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, within health care occupancies can be challenging, particularly when balancing code compliance, patient safety, and the expectations of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

This comprehensive course takes a deep dive into NFPA 101 and its application to health care facilities, focusing on the requirements that directly impact facility operations, inspections, and regulatory compliance. Participants will explore the organization and application of the Life Safety Code, including occupancy classifications, means of egress, fire and smoke protection, building features, and operational requirements specific to health care environments.

Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationship between NFPA 101 and the CMS K-Tag system. Through practical examples and real-world scenarios, participants will examine how code requirements translate into CMS survey expectations, how K-Tags correspond to specific Life Safety Code provisions, and how to identify, interpret, and address potential deficiencies.

This course goes beyond simply identifying code violations. Participants will develop a better understanding of the intent behind the requirements, how to navigate the code effectively, and how to apply that knowledge during inspections, facility assessments, and regulatory surveys.

Designed for fire inspectors, fire marshals, health care facility managers, life safety officers, maintenance professionals, and compliance personnel, this course provides practical tools and insights to help bridge the gap between code language and real-world application.

Participants will leave with the confidence to navigate NFPA 101, understand the CMS K-Tag framework, recognize common compliance challenges, and make informed decisions that support both regulatory compliance and the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
